{"id":12773,"date":"2015-09-29T08:13:20","date_gmt":"2015-09-29T13:13:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=12773"},"modified":"2015-09-29T08:13:20","modified_gmt":"2015-09-29T13:13:20","slug":"the-reason-you-work-so-hard-to-participate-in-the-rat-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=12773","title":{"rendered":"The Reason You Work So Hard to Participate in the Rat Race"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/twoicefloes.com\/the-reason-you-work-so-hard-to-participate-in-the-rat-race\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Reason You Work So Hard to Participate in the Rat Race<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Ralph Waldo Emerson once said,\u00a0\u201cA man in debt is so far a slave.\u201d\u00a0Money has no intrinsic value yet we spend our days damaging our health and spirit in order to obtain it.\u00a0Why do we sacrifice our well-being for it?\u00a0Is it the clich\u00e9 that \u201cwe just want to provide a better life for our kids than we had?\u201d Is it just way of the civilized world?\u00a0The most important question to ask, however, is what power do we have to change this way of thinking and living?\u00a0The reality is simple:\u00a0money is a vehicle for social control.\u00a0Debt makes us good, obedient workers and citizens.<span id=\"more-13454\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The traditional workweek started in 1908 at The New England Cotton Mill in order to allow followers of the Jewish religion to adhere to Sabbath.\u00a0 With the passage of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dol.gov\/dol\/aboutdol\/history\/flsa1938.htm\" target=\"_blank\">The Fair Labor Standards Act in 1938<\/a>, the 40-hour workweek became the norm.\u00a0Data from the 2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/programs-surveys\/acs\/\" target=\"_blank\">American Community Survey<\/a>\u00a0showed that the average commute time in America is about 26 minutes each way. According to a Gallup poll, the average workweek in America is 34.4 hours, however, when only taking into account full time workers, that average shoots up to 47, or 9.4 hours per day during a 5-day workweek. Keeping averages in mind then, between commuting, working and figuring in an hour for lunch (usually less), that puts us at approximately 11 hours and 40 minutes for the average full time worker.
