It brushed aside everything that resisted it.<\/span><span id=\"E73\">\u00a0It used covered wagons and steamships, h<\/span><span id=\"E74\">omesteads and railroads<\/span><span id=\"E75\">, guns and axes<\/span><span id=\"E76\">; it<\/span><span id=\"E77\">\u00a0used laws and politics,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E78\">noble speeches and the\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E79\">rhetoric<\/span><span id=\"E80\">\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E81\">free enterprise<\/span><span id=\"E82\">; it used\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E83\">corporate charters and city charters<\/span><span id=\"E84\">\u00a0and civic pride<\/span><span id=\"E85\">.<\/span><span id=\"E86\">\u00a0It<\/span><span id=\"E87\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E88\">remade<\/span><span id=\"E89\">\u00a0everyth<\/span><span id=\"E90\">ing it touched.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E92\"><span id=\"E93\">This is\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E94\">a rather<\/span><span id=\"E95\">\u00a0unreconstr<\/span><span id=\"E96\">ucted\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E97\">metaphor<\/span><span id=\"E98\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E99\">\u2013<\/span><span id=\"E100\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E101\">we are, for example, bypassing the question of what this wave might look like to a Native<\/span><span id=\"E102\">\u00a0American standing in its way \u2013 b<\/span><span id=\"E103\">ut<\/span><span id=\"E104\">\u00a0it is<\/span><span id=\"E105\">\u00a0a<\/span><span id=\"E106\">t the same time a useful<\/span><span id=\"E107\">\u00a0one<\/span><span id=\"E108\">.<\/span><span id=\"E109\">\u00a0It captures<\/span><span id=\"E110\">\u00a0something of<\/span><span id=\"E111\">\u00a0the old notion of Manifest Destiny, and a bit of the American view of its own history as one of a<\/span><span id=\"E112\">n<\/span><span id=\"E113\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E114\">inevitable<\/span><span id=\"E115\">,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E116\">necessary<\/span><span id=\"E117\">\u00a0advancement.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E118\">I<\/span><span id=\"E119\">t<\/span><span id=\"E120\">\u00a0captures something of the feeling of propulsion that can seem at times to\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E121\">occupy<\/span><span id=\"E122\">\u00a0the heart of the so-called American experiment.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E123\">But<\/span><span id=\"E124\">\u00a0it is also useful because<\/span><span id=\"E125\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E126\">of the questions it raises<\/span><span id=\"E127\">.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E128\">If\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E129\">our history is to be seen<\/span><span id=\"E130\">, metaphorically,<\/span><span id=\"E131\">\u00a0as<\/span><span id=\"E132\">\u00a0a wave of progress<\/span><span id=\"E133\">\u00a0sweeping across the continent<\/span><span id=\"E134\">, w<\/span><span id=\"E135\">hat happens when that wave\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E136\">collides<\/span><span id=\"E137\">\u00a0with the western wall of the Pacific<\/span><span id=\"E138\">\u00a0Ocean<\/span><span id=\"E139\">?<\/span><span id=\"E140\">\u00a0That is, what happens when the wave runs out of land?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E144\">At least<\/span><span id=\"E145\">\u00a0two\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E146\">possibilities suggest themselves<\/span><span id=\"E147\">.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E148\">It might be the case<\/span><span id=\"E149\">, first,<\/span><span id=\"E150\">\u00a0that<\/span><span id=\"E151\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E152\">the wave<\/span><span id=\"E153\">\u00a0of progress (we might call it \u2018progress\u2019)<\/span><span id=\"E154\">\u00a0cannot be stopped.<\/span><span id=\"E155\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E156\">We can imagine it<\/span><span id=\"E157\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E158\">reaching<\/span><span id=\"E159\">\u00a0the boundary of the Pacific and simply\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E160\">continuing to accelerate<\/span><span id=\"E161\">, if not geographically, then into\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E162\">other<\/span><span id=\"E163\">\u00a0realms.<\/span><span id=\"E164\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E165\">If we keep pushing on the image, we come\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E166\">to<\/span><span id=\"E167\">\u00a0the image that the<\/span><span id=\"E168\">\u00a0West Coast<\/span><span id=\"E169\">, and California<\/span><span id=\"E170\">\u00a0in particular<\/span><span id=\"E171\">, often project: they are the furthest point of advancement,<\/span><span id=\"E172\">\u00a0the tip of the<\/span><span id=\"E173\">\u00a0still-<\/span><span id=\"E174\">moving<\/span><span id=\"E175\">\u00a0spear,<\/span><span id=\"E176\">\u00a0the prow of the boat<\/span><span id=\"E177\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Beacon in the Sand We might begin\u00a0with the image of American history\u00a0as a great\u00a0tidal\u00a0wave of\u00a0progress.\u00a0A\u00a0wave\u00a0launched with the appearance of the colonists;\u00a0a wave rolling\u00a0with greater and greater momentum\u00a0westward\u00a0across the\u00a0continent.
