However, the petroleum was not in quantities sufficient to warrant additional exploration in that portion of the basin, the company said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Shell continues to see important exploration potential in the basin, and the area is likely to ultimately be of strategic importance to Alaska and the U.S.,&#8221; said Marvin Odum, president of Shell USA, in the announcement. &#8220;However, this is a clearly disappointing exploration outcome for this part of the basin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Shell will end exploration off Alaska &#8220;for the foreseeable future,&#8221; the company said.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/obama-calls-for-urgent-action-on-climate-change-during-alaska-visit-1.3210412\">Obama calls for urgent action on climate change during Alaska trip<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The decision reflects the results of the exploratory well in the Burger J lease, the high costs associated with Alaska offshore drilling and the challenging and unpredictable federal regulatory environment in offshore Alaska, the company said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"figure col4width floatright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.3246359.1443422988!\/fileImage\/httpImage\/image.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/original_300\/marvin-odum.jpg\" alt=\"Marvin Odum\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"figure-caption\">Shell Oil Co.
