The British Government is spreading untruths about the price of renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>Is it deliberate? One can only assume so owing to the consistency of the pattern and the equally consistent refusal to explain or correct its misleading statements.<\/p>\n<p>The context is also significant: it\u2019s always in the context of supporting nuclear power over renewable energy sources.<\/p>\n<p>One example came a few weeks ago when the Chancellor told the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/parliamentlive.tv\/Event\/Index\/7407feb6-9b7b-4f41-8fc8-00768eab2869\">House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee<\/a>\u00a0in their \u2018annual evidence session\u2019 that the agreed \u2018strike price\u2019 of \u00a392.50 per MWh (in 2012 money, RPI indexed) is\u00a0<em>\u201csubstantially cheaper than other low-carbon technology like offshore wind or onshore wind.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This statement is palpably untrue. After\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.whatsthecost.com\/cpi.aspx\">RPI indexation<\/a>\u00a0\u00a392.50 is actually \u00a396.24 today\u2019s money. Onshore wind and ground-based solar projects have bid for \u2018contracts for difference\u2019 (the main current support mechanism) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/407059\/Contracts_for_Difference_-_Auction_Results_-_Official_Statistics.pdf\">been awarded them<\/a>\u00a0at a price of around \u00a380 per MWh.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hello?? Is anyone at home?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pressed on the justification for the claim the Treasury issued a statement:\u00a0<em>\u201cNuclear energy is an important part of the UK\u2019s energy mix as we move towards a low carbon future.
