Wildlife and the environment paid.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>This spring, as California withered in its fourth year of drought and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/prospect.org\/article\/why-californias-drought-nations-problem\">mandatory water restrictions<\/a>\u00a0were enacted for the first time in the state\u2019s history, a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desertsun.com\/story\/news\/2015\/03\/05\/bottling-water-california-drought\/24389417\/\">news story<\/a>\u00a0broke revealing that Nestl\u00e9 Waters North America was tapping springs in the San Bernardino National Forest in southern California using a permit that expired 27 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>And when the company\u2019s CEO Tim Brown was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scpr.org\/programs\/airtalk\/2015\/05\/13\/42830\/nestl-waters-ceo-isnt-stopping-bottling-in-califor\/\">asked<\/a>\u00a0on a radio program if Nestl\u00e9 would stop bottling water in the Golden State, he replied, \u201cAbsolutely not. In fact, if I could increase it, I would.\u201d That\u2019s because bottled water is big business, even in a country where most people have clean, safe tap water readily and cheaply available. (Although it should be noted that Starbucks agreed to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sustainablebrands.com\/news_and_views\/supply_chain\/caitlin_kauffman\/starbucks_moving_ethos_water_operations_out_california_\">stop sourcing<\/a>\u00a0and manufacturing their Ethos brand water in California after being drought-shamed.)<\/p>\n<p>Profits made by the industry are much to the chagrin of nonprofits like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stopcorporateabuse.org\/\">Corporate Accountability International<\/a>\u00a0(CAI), a corporate watchdog, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodandwaterwatch.org\/\">Food and Water Watch<\/a>\u00a0(FWW), a consumer advocacy group, both of which have waged campaigns against the bottled water industry for years. But representatives from both organizations say they\u2019ve won key fights against the industry in the last 10 years and have helped shift people\u2019s consciousness on the issue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Battle of Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2014 bottled water companies spent more than\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/water-water-everywherein-bottles-1440581400\">$84 million on advertising<\/a>\u00a0to compete with each other and to convince consumers that bottled water is healthier than soda and safer than tap.
