It works\u00a0because of the<em>illusion<\/em>\u00a0of consent. People actually believe they are \u201crepresented.\u201d<a class=\"image-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/ericpetersautos.com\/2015\/09\/21\/representation-and-consent\/long-con-lead\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-41141\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-41141\" src=\"http:\/\/ericpetersautos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/long-con-lead-223x300.png\" alt=\"long con lead\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And so, they accept impositions that would otherwise be intolerable, if imposed on them by a king or a<em>fuhrer<\/em>\u00a0or generalissimo.<\/p>\n<p>But when the \u201cpeople\u201d have decided\u2026 .<\/p>\n<p>Except of course, they\u2019ve done no such thing. It is all an illusion, a rhetorical sleight-of-hand that deftly hides the reality that it is not the \u201cpeople\u201d who decide<em>anything<\/em>\u00a0but rather a small handful of individuals who wield vast \u2013 almost unlimited \u2013 power by claiming to act on their behalf.<\/p>\n<p>Which is a fine-sounding literary device but as a political actuality it is an atrocity.<\/p>\n<p>Have you\u00a0<em>ever<\/em>\u00a0consented to anything the government does to you? Been offered the free choice to accept \u2013 or decline? And not subject to violent repercussions in the event you do decide to decline? What sort of contract is it that you\u2019re never actually been presented with but\u00a0which you\u2019re\u00a0<em>presumed<\/em>\u00a0to have signed \u2013 and which you are bound by whether you\u2019ve signed \u2013 or not?<\/p>\n<p>It is very odd.<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsive-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IdO-Qud6y6o\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The courts have ruled that by dint of having applied for permission to travel \u2013 that is, having applied for a driver\u2019s license \u2013 you gave given your\u00a0<em>implied consent<\/em>\u00a0to, well, pretty much anything the state decides to do to you.
