{"id":12466,"date":"2015-09-21T06:26:26","date_gmt":"2015-09-21T11:26:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=12466"},"modified":"2015-09-21T06:26:26","modified_gmt":"2015-09-21T11:26:26","slug":"secret-files-british-government-courting-arab-tyrants-fossil-fuel-interests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=12466","title":{"rendered":"Secret files: British government courting Arab tyrants, fossil fuel interests"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"64d6\" class=\"graf--h2\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/insurge-intelligence\/secret-files-british-government-courting-arab-tyrants-fossil-fuel-interests-f0f591852392\" target=\"_blank\">Secret files: British government courting Arab tyrants, fossil fuel interests<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"24d2\" class=\"graf--h3\"><em><strong>Official documents show how oil and business interests trump democracy<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<div><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">A range of official government documents released under Freedom of Information (FOI) expose how the British government is valiantly promoting democracy in the Middle East: by courting the region\u2019s most vociferous opponents of democracy.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p id=\"3ea6\" class=\"graf--p\">The approach reflects the consistent focus of Britain\u2019s strategy in the region on promoting \u201cstability\u201d through energy investments and arms sales with authoritarian regimes and outright dictatorships.<\/p>\n<p id=\"119a\" class=\"graf--p\">Responding to an FOI request in February, the UK Foreign &amp; Commonwealth Office (FCO) Middle East and North Africa Directorate provided a list of meetings hosted by other governments or companies attended by Edward Oaken, then the FCO\u2019s Director for the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2b33\" class=\"graf--p\">According to the list, Oakden was hosted fifty-nine times during a period of just over a year, almost entirely by autocratic Arab regimes, fossil fuel companies, and corporate interests.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6669\" class=\"graf--p\">Oakden was FCO Middle East director from 2013 to 2015 before being appointed British Ambassador to Jordan in February,<\/p>\n<p id=\"8fdc\" class=\"graf--p\">From 18th September 2013 to 14th January 2015, Oakden had a total of 26 \u201chospitality\u201d meetings with representatives of serial human rights abusers\u200a\u2014\u200aSaudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Egypt, Oman and Morocco\u200a\u2014\u200aand a further 15 with business groups, investors, and oil companies.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0994\" class=\"graf--p\">The rest were largely routine meetings with British and European political leaders.<\/p>\n<p id=\"47e7\" class=\"graf--p\">The FCO conceded that the list of meetings provided was not exhaustive.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"2ae8\" class=\"graf--h4\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h4-strong\">Blood for oil for cash<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p id=\"0739\" class=\"graf--p\">The Foreign Office meetings included three receptions hosted by British Petroleum (BP), including a \u201chigh level dinner\u201d to discuss \u201cglobal energy challenges\u201d; a Genel Energy annual reception; and a lunch meeting with Centrica Energy \u201con business prospects in the Middle East.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"32d7\" class=\"graf--p\">British firms BP and Genel are heavily invested in Iraq.
