But Western leaders won\u2019t let go of their \u201cregime change\u201d fixation which is making matters worse, writes Rick Sterling.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<hr \/>\n<p>Around 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 2, toddler Aylan Kurdi, his brother, mother and nine others drowned trying to reach a Greek island from Bodrum, Turkey. Around 6 a.m., the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hurriyetdailynews.com\/photographer-of-the-world-shaking-picture-of-drowned-syrian-toddler-i-was-petrified-at-that-moment.aspx?pageID=238&amp;nID=87951&amp;NewsCatID=341%0a\"><u>staff photographer<\/u><\/a>\u00a0from Dogan News Agency came upon Aylan\u2019s body on the beach and took the famous photograph of the little boy lying face down on a beach.<\/p>\n<p>In a few hours it was published online and \u201cwent viral\u201d on Turkish then English language social media. Washington Post Beirut chief Liz Sly posted the photo with comment that Aylan\u2019s death is \u201cemblematic of world\u2019s failure in Syria.\u201d Minutes later, Nadim Houry of Human Rights Watch (HRW) posted the photo with comment that it\u2019s an \u201cindictment of collective failure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"image-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/101754_recep_tayyip_erdogan_dogum_yeri.jpg?55ac53\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13377\" src=\"http:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/101754_recep_tayyip_erdogan_dogum_yeri.jpg?55ac53\" alt=\"Turkish President Recep Erdogan.\" width=\"264\" height=\"204\" data-lazy-loaded=\"true\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Media worldwide began featuring video and stories showing refugees traveling by land in Europe. The crisis that burst into view on Sept. 2 has been building for years. But can the raised consciousness address the root cause of the crisis?<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">The media and numerous organizations have shone a bright light on the refugee crisis. North European countries with low birth rates and aging populations are accepting more refugees. Germany will reportedly accept 800,000 over the next year. Many other countries including the U.S.\u00a0are promising to accept more refugees from Syria. This is welcome news.
