Boulder Weekly “Frackademia” Investigation Reveals University of Colorado for Sale to Oil and Gas Industry<\/a><\/h3>\n

Boulder Weekly, a Boulder, Colorado alternative weekly newspaper, has published a 10,000 word\u00a0\u201dfrackademia<\/a>\u201d investigation in a\u00a0special edition<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0newspaper.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0long-form investigation by Joel Dyer<\/a>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0based on\u00a0thousands of documents obtained by Greenpeace\u00a0USA<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2014 exposes the ongoing partnership between the University of Colorado-Boulder’s\u00a0Leeds School of Business and the\u00a0Common Sense Policy Roundtable (CSPR<\/span>)<\/a>, the latter an oil and gas industry\u00a0front group<\/a>. The investigation reveals connections to\u00a0Koch Industries<\/a>,\u00a0American Petroleum Institute<\/a>, and\u00a0Encana<\/a>, among\u00a0others.<\/p>\n

University of Colorado, in this case, sat in the center of a tight-knit network of Colorado movers-and-shakers with ties to the oil and gas companies and\u00a0public relations<\/a>\u00a0firms maintaining them as clients. That network is well-displayed in the LittleSis map\u00a0created below by Greenpeace\u00a0USA<\/span>\u00a0researcher Jesse Coleman and Boulder Weekly has created\u00a0seven influence maps of its own<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The story begins in April 2013, when\u00a0CSPR<\/span>\u00a0signed an agreement with\u00a0<\/a>University<\/a>\u00a0of Colorado<\/a>\u00a0for the latter \u201cto provide unbiased, third-party research\u201d on behalf of\u00a0CSPR<\/span>, as seen in the\u00a0proposal<\/a>\u00a0obtained by Coleman. While self-serving as a principle, the research ended up as anything but\u00a0\u201cunbiased.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cDocuments<\/a>\u2026reveal that the studies were conceived of, edited and strategically used by\u00a0PR<\/span>\u00a0firms to influence fracking policy in Colorado, yet\u00a0CSPR<\/span>\u2019s financial ties to the oil and gas industry were\u00a0not disclosed<\/a>\u00a0to the media or in thepublished studies<\/a>,\u201d wrote Coleman in an\u00a0article piggy-backing off of the Boulder Weekly investigation<\/a>. \u201cCSPR<\/span>\u00a0set priorities for the researchers,\u00a0prioritizing oil and gas work<\/a>. The studies were aimed at politically contentious topics, like local regulation over fracking\u00a0wells.\u201d<\/p>\n
