{"id":12398,"date":"2015-09-18T07:29:10","date_gmt":"2015-09-18T12:29:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=12398"},"modified":"2015-09-18T07:29:10","modified_gmt":"2015-09-18T12:29:10","slug":"boulder-weekly-frackademia-investigation-reveals-university-of-colorado-for-sale-to-oil-and-gas-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=12398","title":{"rendered":"Boulder Weekly &#8220;Frackademia&#8221; Investigation Reveals University of Colorado for Sale to Oil and Gas Industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field-name-field-bimage field-type-image field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<h3 id=\"page-title\" class=\"page__title title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2015\/09\/17\/boulder-weekly-frackademia-investigation-university-colorado-for-sale\" target=\"_blank\">Boulder Weekly &#8220;Frackademia&#8221; Investigation Reveals University of Colorado for Sale to Oil and Gas Industry<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/blog_teaser\/public\/blogimages\/shutterstock_296962085.jpg?itok=2BnyrHYx\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>Boulder Weekly, a Boulder, Colorado alternative weekly newspaper, has published a 10,000 word\u00a0\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/directory\/vocabulary\/10232\" target=\"_blank\">frackademia<\/a>\u201d investigation in a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/npaper-wehaa.com\/boulder-weekly\/2015\/09\/17\/\" target=\"_blank\">special edition<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.boulderweekly.com\/article-14970-behind-the-curtain.html\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0long-form investigation by Joel Dyer<\/a>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0based on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/2271128-cora-cu-boulder-remi-response-full.html\" target=\"_blank\">thousands of documents obtained by Greenpeace\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2014 exposes the ongoing partnership between the University of Colorado-Boulder&#8217;s\u00a0Leeds School of Business and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/littlesis.org\/org\/74484\/Common_Sense_Policy_Roundtable\" target=\"_blank\">Common Sense Policy Roundtable (<span class=\"caps\">CSPR<\/span>)<\/a>, the latter an oil and gas industry\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php\/Front_groups\" target=\"_blank\">front group<\/a>. The investigation reveals connections to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/desmogblog.com\/koch-industries-inc\" target=\"_blank\">Koch Industries<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/directory\/vocabulary\/643\" target=\"_blank\">American Petroleum Institute<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/desmogblog.com\/tags\/encana\" target=\"_blank\">Encana<\/a>, among\u00a0others.<\/p>\n<p>University of Colorado, in this case, sat in the center of a tight-knit network of Colorado movers-and-shakers with ties to the oil and gas companies and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php\/Public_relations\" target=\"_blank\">public relations<\/a>\u00a0firms maintaining them as clients. That network is well-displayed in the LittleSis map\u00a0created below by Greenpeace\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span>\u00a0researcher Jesse Coleman and Boulder Weekly has created\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/npaper-wehaa.com\/boulder-weekly\/2015\/09\/17\/#?article=2605391\" target=\"_blank\">seven influence maps of its own<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/littlesis.org\/maps\/903-remi-university-of-colorado-boulder\" target=\"_blank\">view this map on LittleSis<\/a><\/div>\n<p>The story begins in April 2013, when\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/2271128-cora-cu-boulder-remi-response-full.html#document\/p784\/a235088\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"caps\">CSPR<\/span>\u00a0signed an agreement with\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/2271128-cora-cu-boulder-remi-response-full.html#document\/p784\/a235088\" target=\"_blank\">University<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/2271128-cora-cu-boulder-remi-response-full.html#document\/p784\/a235088\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0of Colorado<\/a>\u00a0for the latter \u201cto provide unbiased, third-party research\u201d on behalf of\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">CSPR<\/span>, as seen in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/2271128-cora-cu-boulder-remi-response-full.html#document\/p784\/a235088\" target=\"_blank\">proposal<\/a>\u00a0obtained by Coleman. While self-serving as a principle, the research ended up as anything but\u00a0\u201cunbiased.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/2271128-cora-cu-boulder-remi-response-full.html\" target=\"_blank\">Documents<\/a>\u2026reveal that the studies were conceived of, edited and strategically used by\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">PR<\/span>\u00a0firms to influence fracking policy in Colorado, yet\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">CSPR<\/span>\u2019s financial ties to the oil and gas industry were\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greeleytribune.com\/news\/feature2\/14896285-113\/energy-pipeline-leeds-school-of-business-attempts-to-answer-what\" target=\"_blank\">not disclosed<\/a>\u00a0to the media or in the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oilandgasbmps.org\/docs\/CO90-Economic-Impact-Of-Fracking-Moratorium.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">published studies<\/a>,\u201d wrote Coleman in an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/frackademia-investigation-reveals-colorado-university-involved-in-pro-fracking-pr-scheme\/\" target=\"_blank\">article piggy-backing off of the Boulder Weekly investigation<\/a>. \u201c<span class=\"caps\">CSPR<\/span>\u00a0set priorities for the researchers,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/2271128-cora-cu-boulder-remi-response-full.html\" target=\"_blank\">prioritizing oil and gas work<\/a>.
