Though the Gulf has called for the overthrow of Assad, sources suggest Obama agreed to Putin\u2019s increased support for him<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Organisation for Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the world\u2019s second largest intergovernmental body after the United Nations, issued a dramatic\u00a0call<\/a>\u00a0this Sunday for the overthrow of the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria.<\/p>\n

The new OIC communique comes in the wake of recent indications that the West is willing to slow-down the offensive against Assad to focus on defeating the Islamic State (IS).<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Downing Street declared\u00a0plans<\/a>\u00a0for \u201climited\u201d airstrikes against IS targets in Syria, coupled with a diplomatic push that would see Assad remain in power for six months.<\/p>\n

Toward a \u2018new Syrian state\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Highlighting the need for urgent action to address Syria\u2019s escalating refugee crisis, the OIC communique on behalf of 57 member states urged the UN Security Council (UNSC) to renew \u201cthe pursuit of rapid political solutions\u201d to the conflict that would establish a \u201ctransitional government with full executive power that would allow building a new Syrian state\u201d.<\/p>\n

This would require the UNSC to \u201cfully implement the Geneva Communique,\u201d the aborted 2012 roadmap for the\u00a0transition<\/a>\u00a0of Syria to a new unity government without Assad.<\/p>\n

Among the major\u00a0reasons<\/a>\u00a0the Geneva plan broke down was US and UK determination to continue arming and training rebel groups even during the peace talks, the exclusion of Kurdish groups from the process, and the West\u2019s\u00a0insistence<\/a>\u00a0at the time that the outcome would necessarily exclude Assad from power.<\/p>\n

The new OIC communique is thus effectively a call to escalate military support for Syrian rebels to forcibly oust Assad from power.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
