Reproduced at Resilience.org.<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve always known walking is good for us&#8212; it burns calories, reduces stress and helps the environment.<\/p>\n<div>But we never knew how really great it is for us until the just released\u00a0<a class=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.surgeongeneral.gov\/library\/calls\/walking-and-walkable-communities\/exec-summary.html\" target=\"_blank\">Call to Action on Walking<\/a>\u00a0from US Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy, who explains, \u201cAn average of 22 minutes a day of physical activity \u2013 such as brisk walking \u2013 can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes. The key is to get started because even a small first effort can make a big difference in improving the personal health of an individual and the public health of the nation.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Surgeon General Murthy announced a\u00a0<a class=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.surgeongeneral.gov\/library\/calls\/walking-and-walkable-communities\/\" target=\"_blank\">national campaign<\/a>\u00a0to encourage Americans to walk more and make all communities safer and easier for walking. His office will partner with schools, citizens groups and businesses to meet these goals.<\/div>\n<div><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWalking is a simple, effective and affordable way to build physical activity into our lives,\u201d Murthy adds. \u201cThat is why we need to step it up as a country ensuring that everyone can choose to walk in their own communities.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The\u00a0<a class=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.surgeongeneral.gov\/library\/calls\/walking-and-walkable-communities\/call-to-action-walking-and-walkable-communites.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">landmark report<\/a>&#8212;which is being compared to the Surgeon General\u2019s 1964 warning on the dangers of smoking&#8212;is based on definitive\u00a0<a class=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/everybodywalk.org\/media_assets\/EBW_WALKING_REVOLUTION.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">medical evidence<\/a>\u00a0that moderate physical exercise boosts your health cuts your chances of diabetes, dementia, depression, colon cancer, cardiovascular disease, anxiety and high blood pressure by\u00a0<a class=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.exerciseismedicine.org\/assets\/page_documents\/EIM%20Fact%20Sheet%202014.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">40 percent<\/a>\u00a0or more.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>A\u00a0<a class=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/science\/science-news\/11345448\/Lack-of-exercise-is-twice-as-deadly-as-obesity-Cambridge-University-finds.html\" target=\"_blank\">major study<\/a>\u00a0released this year shows that lack of exercise is twice as deadly as obesity, according to Cambridge University researchers who studied more than 300,000 people over 12 years.\u00a0 Their findings match another\u00a0<a class=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/ajcn.nutrition.org\/content\/95\/2\/437.long\" target=\"_blank\">comprehensive study<\/a>that found sitting for long periods is linked to higher death rates.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This explains why the Surgeon General and a growing chorus of health care experts are singing the praises of walking.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Surgeon General\u2019s Prescription for Health: Walk More Walking image via\u00a0forklift\/flickr.
