War Drums Beating: Bulgaria Blocks Russian Access To Its Airspace For Syria Flights<\/a><\/h3>\n

On Monday\u00a0we flagged<\/a>\u00a0a notable escalation in the build up to the geopolitical \u201cmain event\u201d in Syria where, thanks largely to the West\u2019s ambition to break Gazprom\u2019s leverage over Europe, the US and Russia are one \u201caccidental\u201d run-in away from taking the \u201cproxy\u201d out of the term \u201cproxy war.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the Kremlin now ramping up its military presence around the Assad stronghold of Latakia, the US is scrambling to do anything and everything in its power to slow the Russian build up –\u00a0including putting pressure on Greece to deny Russia the use of its airspace for supply flights to Syria.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time Greece has found itself in the middle of Cold War 2.0, as Athens (and notably Panagiotis Lafazanis) used Greece\u2019s geographical position to field\u00a0competing gas pipeline bids<\/a>\u00a0from Washington and Moscow during the height of the country\u2019s fraught bailout negotiations.<\/p>\n

So while we wait for Greece to pick a side between the US and Russia by either allowing Moscow to use its airspace on the way to supplying Assad or else snubbing the Kremlin and jeopardizing a potentially lucrative gas deal,\u00a0at least one country has been quick to make a decision: Bulgaria…<\/strong><\/p>\n

U.S. asks Greece to deny Russian flights to Syria<\/a><\/h2>\n
