Hundreds Rally in Alaska to Tell Obama \u2018Climate Leaders Don\u2019t Drill the Arctic\u2019<\/a><\/h3>\n

Climate groups\u00a0rallied in Anchorage, Alaska<\/a>\u00a0yesterday to demand that the U.S. government, President Obama and Alaskan leaders take the urgent action needed to stop\u00a0climate change<\/a>. The\u00a0\u201cRally to Confront the Glacial Pace of Political Action<\/a>\u201d\u00a0took place\u00a0as President Obama met\u00a0with ministers from around the world for the\u00a0\u201cGLACIER\u201d conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n

More than 300\u00a0people participated in yesterday\u2019s\u00a0rally. The groups\u00a0four \u201cdemands\u201d for political leaders<\/a>\u00a0include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Support an immediate shift to the development and widespread implementation ofrenewable energy<\/a>\u00a0sources<\/li>\n
  2. Support the call by global scientists to keep 80 percent of the\u00a0world\u2019s fossil fuel reserves in the ground<\/a><\/li>\n
  3. Protect and champion the rights of communities of color on the front lines of climate change<\/li>\n
  4. Commit the U.S. to legally binding commitments at the\u00a02015 UN Climate Change Conference<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In response to the President\u2019s visit, Faith Gemmill of\u00a0RedOil<\/a>\u00a0said, \u201cIndigenous peoples of Alaska have seen alarming impacts from climate change already, and\u00a0Shell\u2019s drilling<\/a>\u00a0will only make them worse. We\u2019ve seen\u00a0over 300 wildfires<\/a>\u00a0this past summer which burned throughout the state and forced communities to evacuate, as well as the very real threat of actual forced relocation of coastal communities due to\u00a0coastal sea ice loss<\/a>\u00a0and erosion.\u201d<\/p>\n

    The President has said\u00a0again and again<\/a>\u00a0that climate change poses a serious threat to humanity and in going to Alaska, he is highlighting how the state is on the\u00a0front lines of the fight against climate change<\/a>.<\/p>\n
