Not a week goes by without the Pentagon carping about an ominous Russian “threat”.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Chairman of\u00a0the Joint Chiefs of\u00a0Staff Martin Dempsey entered certified Donald \u201cknown unknown\u201d Rumsfeld territory when he recently tried to\u00a0conceptualize the \u201cthreat\u201d; \u201cThreats are the combination, or the aggregate, of\u00a0capabilities and intentions. Let me set aside for\u00a0the moment, intentions, because I don\u2019t know what Russia intends.\u201d<\/div>\n

So Dempsey admits he does not know what he\u2019s talking about. What he seems to\u00a0know is that Russia is a \u201cthreat\u201d anyway\u00a0\u2014 in\u00a0space, cyber space, ground-based cruise missiles, submarines.<\/p>\n

And most of\u00a0all, a threat to\u00a0NATO; \u201cOne of\u00a0the things that Russia does seem to\u00a0do is either discredit, or even more ominously, create the conditions for\u00a0the failure of\u00a0NATO.\u201d<\/p>\n

So Russia \u201cdoes seem\u201d to\u00a0discredit an already self-discredited NATO. That\u2019s not much of\u00a0a \u201cthreat\u201d.<\/p>\n

All these rhetorical games take place while NATO \u201cdoes seem\u201d to\u00a0get ready for\u00a0a direct confrontation with\u00a0Russia. And make no mistake; Moscow does view NATO\u2019s belligerence as\u00a0a real threat.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s PGS vs. S-500<\/strong><\/p>\n

The \u201cthreat\u201d surge happens just as\u00a0US Think Tankland recharges the notion of\u00a0containment of\u00a0Russia. Notorious CIA front Stratfor has peddled a propaganda piece praising Cold War mastermind\u00a0George Kennan<\/a>\u00a0as\u00a0the author of\u00a0the \u201ccontainment of\u00a0Russia\u201d policy.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The US intel apparatus don\u2019t do irony; before\u00a0he died, Kennan said it was now the US that had to\u00a0be contained, not Russia.<\/p>\n

Containment of\u00a0Russia \u2013 via\u00a0the expansion of\u00a0the EU and NATO\u00a0\u2014 has always been a work in\u00a0progress because the geopolitical imperative has always been the same; as\u00a0Dr. Zbigniew \u201cThe Grand Chessboard\u201d Brzezinski never tired of\u00a0stressing, it was always about\u00a0preventing the \u2013 threatening\u00a0\u2014 emergence of\u00a0a Eurasian power capable of\u00a0challenging the US.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
