{"id":11556,"date":"2015-08-28T07:43:27","date_gmt":"2015-08-28T12:43:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=11556"},"modified":"2015-08-28T07:43:27","modified_gmt":"2015-08-28T12:43:27","slug":"first-state-approves-drones-with-rubber-bullets-tasers-pepper-spray-tear-gas-sound-cannons-for-domestic-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=11556","title":{"rendered":"First State Approves Drones with Rubber Bullets, Tasers, Pepper Spray, Tear Gas, Sound Cannons for Domestic Use"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2015\/08\/first-state-approves-drones-with-rubber-bullets-tasers-pepper-spray-tear-gas-sound-cannons-for-domestic-use.html\" target=\"_blank\">First State Approves Drones with Rubber Bullets, Tasers, Pepper Spray, Tear Gas, Sound Cannons for Domestic Use<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>North Dakota has\u00a0<a title=\"become \" href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2015\/08\/26\/first-state-legalizes-armed-drones-for-cops-thanks-to-a-lobbyist.html\" target=\"_blank\">become\u00a0<\/a>the first state to approve government use of drones equipped with \u201cless than lethal weapons\u201d, including \u201crubber bullets, pepper spray, tear gas, sound cannons, and Tasers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The bill passsed largely due to the\u00a0<a title=\"inherent corruption \" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2015\/08\/corruption-is-legal-in-the-usa.html\">inherent corruption\u00a0<\/a>of the US political system, as the wording was modified to allow for weaponized drones and approved \u201cthanks to a last-minute push by a \u2026 lobbyist representing law enforcement\u2014tight with a booming drone industry\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican who originally proposed the bill had written it to ban all weaponization of drones, and he was dismayed that it ultaimately passed in a form that allows non-lethal weaponization.<\/p>\n<p>Police claim the drones will only be used in \u201cnon-criminal\u201d situations, such as surveilance, but did not mention that they have already been used in at least one criminal situation, or that the claim is dubious at best given the ultra-militarized and brutal state of policing in the US, which many, particularly those in ethnic minority groups, liken to military occupation.<\/p>\n<p>A police deputy, explaining why he opposed requiring search warrants for use of drones,\u00a0<a title=\"told \" href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2015\/08\/26\/first-state-legalizes-armed-drones-for-cops-thanks-to-a-lobbyist.html\" target=\"_blank\">told\u00a0<\/a>Daily Beast that \u201cyou don\u2019t want things that would potentially have a chilling effect on [drone] manufacturers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really all about the commercial development,\u201d said Republican rep.
