Rutgers University Warns Students \u2013 \u201cThere is No Such Thing as Free Speech\u201d<\/a><\/h3>\n

Ironically, U.S. college campuses are rapidly becoming the least free, most censored places in the country. Many people have commented on this, including high profile, enormously talented comedians such as Chris Rock and Jerry Seinfeld. In fact, Chris Rock was so appalled thathe stopped playing colleges<\/a>\u00a0because audiences had become\u00a0\u201ctoo conservative\u201d Before getting all bent out of shape, this is what he meant:<\/p>\n

Not in their political views \u2014 not like they\u2019re voting Republican \u2014 but in their social views and their willingness not to offend anybody. Kids raised on a culture of \u201cWe\u2019re not going to keep score in the game because we don\u2019t want anybody to lose.\u201d Or just ignoring race to a fault. You can\u2019t say \u201cthe black kid over there.\u201d No, it\u2019s \u201cthe guy with the red shoes.\u201d You can\u2019t even be offensive on your way to being inoffensive.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Although I\u2019ve touched upon this subject before, I haven\u2019t given it nearly the amount of attention it deserves. That said, I would suggest rereading a powerful\u00a0post published earlier this summer,\u00a0A Professor Speaks Out \u2013 How Coddled, Hyper Sensitive Undergrads are Ruining College Learning<\/a><\/strong>. Here\u2019s an excerpt:<\/p>\n

Things have changed since I started teaching. The vibe is different. I wish there were a less blunt way to put this, but my students sometimes scare me \u2014 particularly the liberal ones.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I once saw an adjunct not get his contract renewed after students complained that he exposed them to \u201coffensive\u201d texts written by Edward Said and Mark Twain.\u00a0His response, that the texts were meant to be a little upsetting, only fueled the students\u2019 ire and sealed his fate.\u00a0 That was enough to get me to comb through my syllabi and cut out anything I could see upsetting a coddled undergrad, texts ranging from Upton Sinclair to Maureen Tkacik \u2014 and I wasn\u2019t the only one who made adjustments, either.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n
