New UN Privacy Chief Proclaims \u2013 UK Digital Surveillance is \u201cWorse than Orwell\u201d<\/a><\/h3>\n

Whereas today there are many parts of the English countryside where there are more cameras than George Orwell could ever have imagined. So the situation in some cases is far worse already.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013 UN Privacy chief,\u00a0Joseph Cannataci<\/p>\n

The UN special rapporteur on privacy, Joseph Cannataci, pulls no punches when it comes to privacy. It\u2019s hard to disagree with what he has to say.<\/p>\n

From\u00a0the\u00a0Guardian<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n

The first UN privacy chief has said the world needs a Geneva convention style law for the internet to safeguard data and combat the threat of massive clandestine digital surveillance.<\/em><\/p>\n

Speaking to the Guardian weeks after his appointment as the UN special rapporteur on privacy, Joseph Cannataci described British surveillance oversight as being \u201ca joke\u201d, and said the situation is worse than anything George Orwell could have foreseen.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

He added that he doesn\u2019t use\u00a0Facebook<\/a>\u00a0or Twitter, and said it was regrettable that vast numbers of people sign away their digital rights without thinking about it.<\/em><\/p>\n

One thing that is certainly going to come up in my mandate is the business model that large corporations are using<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cSome people were complaining because they couldn\u2019t find me on Facebook. They couldn\u2019t find me on\u00a0Twitter<\/a>. But since I believe in privacy, I\u2019ve never felt the need for it,\u201d Cannataci, a professor of technology law at University of Groningen in the Netherlands and head of the department of Information Policy & Governance at the University of Malta, said.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
