{"id":11464,"date":"2015-08-26T08:01:26","date_gmt":"2015-08-26T13:01:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=11464"},"modified":"2015-08-26T08:01:26","modified_gmt":"2015-08-26T13:01:26","slug":"china-loses-all-control-arrests-journalist-financial-executive-over-market-crash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=11464","title":{"rendered":"China Loses All Control: Arrests Journalist, Financial Executive Over Market Crash"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2015-08-26\/china-loses-all-control-arrests-journalist-financial-executive-over-market-crash\" target=\"_blank\">China Loses All Control: Arrests Journalist, Financial Executive Over Market Crash<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>For two months, China has been on a quest to control both the stock market itself and the narrative around the stock market.<\/p>\n<p>After an unwind in the CNY1 trillion back alley margin lending complex sparked a late June selloff, China cobbled together a plunge protection team run by China Securities Finance (an arm of CSRC) and began intervening in the market.<\/p>\n<p>That effort has cost an estimated CNY900 billion so far.<\/p>\n<p>On July 20,\u00a0<strong>Caijing magazine suggested that CSF was setting up to scale back the market interventions which many believed had kept the SHCOMP from collapsing altogether.\u00a0<\/strong>Here&#8217;s what happened next:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user92183\/imageroot\/2015\/08\/PPTRumor.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user92183\/imageroot\/2015\/08\/PPTRumor_0.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"310\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That suggestion caused futures to slide in China and in short order, the &#8220;rumor&#8221; was denied by CSRC.\u00a0<strong>Now, the reporter who penned that story has been arrested<\/strong>\u00a0for, as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2015-08-25\/haitong-faces-china-probe-for-suspected-client-rules-violation\">Bloomberg put it earlier today<\/a>, &#8220;spreading fake stock and futures trading information.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-i1440593873913815036\" class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\" data-twitter-extracted-i1440593871120947983=\"true\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">BREAKING: China&#8217;s well-respected Caijing magazine confirmed 1 of its reporters was arrested by police for a stock market story denied by Gov<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 George Chen (@george_chen)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/george_chen\/status\/636398644246130688\">August 26, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This comes on the heels of a move by Beijing earlier this week to suppress discussion of Monday&#8217;s market rout, which, along with the selloffs it triggered in bourses across the globe, was dubbed &#8220;Black Monday.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Of course this isn&#8217;t the first time &#8211; and it probably won&#8217;t be the last &#8211; that China has cracked down on the media for &#8220;subversive&#8221; coverage of financial markets.
