{"id":11324,"date":"2015-08-21T09:41:49","date_gmt":"2015-08-21T14:41:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=11324"},"modified":"2015-08-21T09:41:49","modified_gmt":"2015-08-21T14:41:49","slug":"nestle-pays-only-524-to-extract-27000000-gallons-of-california-drinking-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=11324","title":{"rendered":"Nestle Pays Only $524 to Extract 27,000,000 Gallons of California Drinking Water"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"post-heading\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theantimedia.org\/nestle-pays-only-524-to-exract-27000000-gallons-of-california-drinking-water\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nestle Pays Only $524 to Extract 27,000,000 Gallons of California Drinking Water<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><i>Los Angeles, CA \u2014<\/i>\u00a0Nestle has found itself more and more frequently in the glare of the\u00a0<b>California drought-shame spotlight<\/b>\u00a0than it would arguably care to be \u2014 though not frequently enough, apparently, for the megacorporation to have spontaneously sprouted a\u00a0<i>conscience<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Drought-shaming worked sufficiently enough for Starbucks to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desertsun.com\/story\/news\/environment\/2015\/05\/08\/starbucks-stop-bottling-ethos-water-california\/27024059\/\" target=\"_blank\">stop bottling water<\/a>\u00a0in the now-arid state entirely, uprooting its operations all the way to Pennsylvania. But Nestle simply shrugged off public outrage and then\u00a0<i>upped the ante<\/i>\u00a0by increasing its draw from natural springs \u2014 most notoriously in the\u00a0<b>San Bernardino National Forest \u2014<\/b>\u00a0with an\u00a0<i>absurdly<\/i>\u00a0expired\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/2168088\/arrowhead-letter-1987.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">permit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Because\u00a0<b><i>profit<\/i><\/b><b>,\u00a0<\/b>of course. Or, perhaps more befittingly,\u00a0<b><i>theft.\u00a0<\/i><\/b>But you get the idea.<\/p>\n<p>Nestle has somehow\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desertsun.com\/story\/news\/environment\/2015\/07\/23\/review-nestle-water-permit-neglected-decades\/30562241\/\" target=\"_blank\">managed<\/a>\u00a0the most sweetheart of deals for its Arrowhead 100% Mountain Spring Water, which is ostensibly sourced from Arrowhead Springs \u2014 and which also\u00a0<b>happens to be located on public land in a national forest<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, the company drew\u00a0<b>27 million gallons of water<\/b>\u00a0from 12 springs in Strawberry Canyon for the brand \u2014 apparently by employing rather impressive legerdemain \u2014\u00a0<i>considering the permit to do so\u00a0<\/i><b><i>expired in 1988<\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>But, as Nestle will tell you, that really isn\u2019t cause for concern since it swears it is a good steward of the land and, after all, that expired permit\u2019s annual fee has been diligently and faithfully paid in full \u2014\u00a0<b><i>all\u00a0<\/i><\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desertsun.com\/story\/news\/2015\/03\/05\/bottling-water-california-drought\/24389417\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b><i>$524<\/i><\/b><\/a><b><i>\u00a0of it<\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>And that isn\u2019t the only water it collects. Another\u00a0<i>51 million gallons of<\/i><b><i>groundwater<\/i><\/b>\u00a0were drawn from the area by Nestle that same year.<\/p>\n<p>There is another site the company drains for profit while California\u2019s historic drought rages on: Deer Canyon.
