A friend pointed us to a\u00a0recent article<\/a>published by the Brennan Center for Justice that discusses the transformation of household gadgets into spying devices. The author bought a new TV, and after reading the 46 pages of \u201cprivacy policy\u201d in the manual, is apparently apprehensive about turning it on. Actually, \u201cprivacy policy\u201d seems a misnomer. It would be more accurate to rename it \u201cspying policy\u201d.<\/p>\n

I just bought a new TV. The old one had a good run, but after the volume got stuck on 63, I decided it was time to replace it.\u00a0I am now the owner of a new \u201csmart\u201d TV,<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0which promises to deliver streaming multimedia content, games, apps, social media, and Internet browsing. Oh, and TV too.\u00a0The only problem is that I\u2019m now afraid to use it.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0You would be too \u2014 if you read through the 46-page privacy policy.<\/p>\n

The amount of data this thing collects is staggering. It logs where, when, how, and for how long you use the TV. It sets tracking cookies and beacons designed to detect \u201cwhen you have viewed particular content or a particular email message.\u201d It records \u201cthe apps you use, the websites you visit, and how you interact with content.\u201d It ignores \u201cdo-not-track\u201d requests as a considered matter of policy.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
