{"id":11158,"date":"2015-08-17T08:11:05","date_gmt":"2015-08-17T13:11:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=11158"},"modified":"2015-08-17T08:11:05","modified_gmt":"2015-08-17T13:11:05","slug":"did-you-know-that-the-u-s-no-longer-has-any-strategic-grain-reserves-at-all","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=11158","title":{"rendered":"Did You Know That The U.S. No Longer Has Any Strategic Grain Reserves At All?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/theeconomiccollapseblog.com\/archives\/did-you-know-that-the-u-s-no-longer-has-any-strategic-grain-reserves-at-all\" target=\"_blank\">Did You Know That The U.S. No Longer Has Any Strategic Grain Reserves At All?<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theeconomiccollapseblog.com\/?attachment_id=9122\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9122\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9122\" src=\"http:\/\/theeconomiccollapseblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Desolation-Public-Domain-460x345.jpg\" alt=\"Desolation - Public Domain\" width=\"460\" height=\"345\" \/><\/a>Once upon a time, it was popular to say that the U.S. government only had enough wheat stored up to provide everyone in America with half a loaf of bread.\u00a0 But that is not true anymore.\u00a0 Recently, I discovered that the U.S. does not have any strategic grain reserves left at all.\u00a0 Zero.\u00a0 Nada.\u00a0 Zilch.\u00a0 As you will see below, the USDA liquidated the remaining reserves back in 2008.\u00a0 So if a major food crisis hit this country, our government would have\u00a0<strong>nothing<\/strong>\u00a0to give us.\u00a0 Of course the federal government could always go out and try to buy or seize food to feed the population during a major emergency, but that wouldn\u2019t actually increase the total amount of food that was available.\u00a0 Instead, it would just give the government more power over who gets it.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. strategic grain reserve was initially created during the days of the Great Depression.\u00a0 Back then, the wisdom of storing up food for hard times was self-evident.\u00a0 Unfortunately, over time interest in this program faded, and at this point there is no strategic grain reserve in the United States at all.\u00a0 The following comes from\u00a0<a title=\"the Los Angeles Times\" href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2012\/sep\/21\/opinion\/la-oe-kaufman-food-hunger-drought-20120921\" target=\"_blank\">the Los Angeles Times<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The modern concept of a strategic grain reserve was first proposed in the 1930s by Wall Street legend Benjamin Graham. Graham\u2019s idea hinged on the clever management of buffer stocks of grain to tame our daily bread\u2019s tendencies toward boom and bust. When grain prices rose above a threshold, supplies could be increased by bringing reserves to the market \u2014 which, in turn, would dampen prices.
