{"id":11072,"date":"2015-08-15T09:08:16","date_gmt":"2015-08-15T14:08:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=11072"},"modified":"2015-08-15T09:08:16","modified_gmt":"2015-08-15T14:08:16","slug":"emissions-reduction-target-julie-bishop-disputes-climate-change-authoritys-figures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=11072","title":{"rendered":"Emissions reduction target: Julie Bishop disputes Climate Change Authority&#8217;s figures"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2015-08-15\/climate-change-authoritys-estimations-wrong-julie-bishop\/6700234\" target=\"_blank\">Emissions reduction target: Julie Bishop disputes Climate Change Authority&#8217;s figures<\/a><\/h3>\n<p class=\"first\">Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has responded to the Climate Change Authority&#8217;s criticism of the Government&#8217;s emission reduction targets, saying its estimates are incorrect.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the Federal Government\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2015-08-11\/government-plans-to-cut-carbon-emissions-by-26-per-cent-by-2030\/6686780\" target=\"_self\">announced plans to cut emissions by 26-28 per cent by 2030 based on emissions from the year 2005.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Climate Change Authority said with the &#8220;right&#8221; policies it believed more ambitious targets than those adopted by the Government could be achieved at modest costs.<\/p>\n<p>Authority chair Bernie Fraser said in a statement the body had\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2015-08-14\/emission-reduction-targets-not-enough-climate-change-authority\/6699034\" target=\"_self\">recommended reductions of 45-63 per cent by 2030<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Along with other countries, Australia has agreed to work towards reducing emissions to levels consistent with limiting global warming to less than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels \u2014 this remains a challenging task,&#8221; he said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Measured against the reductions in emissions required to deliver a reasonable chance of limiting global warming to 2 degrees, all countries have a lot more work to do over the decades ahead.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But Ms Bishop said figures released by the Authority were disputed by the Federal Government.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mr Bernie Fraser &#8230; [stated] China&#8217;s emissions would increase by 72 to 96 per cent above 2005 levels by 2030. The Australian Government disputes these figures,&#8221; she said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;China&#8217;s 2030 target will allow emissions to increase by around 150 per cent from 2005 levels when calculated on China&#8217;s national currency.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She said Australia&#8217;s 2030 target was strong, responsible and achievable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have a proven track record of meeting our climate targets.
