{"id":11060,"date":"2015-08-15T07:51:37","date_gmt":"2015-08-15T12:51:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=11060"},"modified":"2015-08-15T07:51:37","modified_gmt":"2015-08-15T12:51:37","slug":"canada-pension-plan-swings-to-a-loss-after-record-breaking-profits-last-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=11060","title":{"rendered":"Canada Pension Plan Swings To A Loss After Record-Breaking Profits Last Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.ca\/2015\/08\/14\/cpp-contributions-offset-small-loss-on-investments-in-busy-deal-making-quarter_n_7988502.html\" target=\"_blank\">Canada Pension Plan Swings To A Loss After Record-Breaking Profits Last Year<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>TORONTO \u2014 The CPP Fund had a small investment loss\u00a0in its most recent quarter but\u00a0the\u00a0retirement fund&#8217;s\u00a0assets increased by $4 billion overall because of contributions from the Canada Pension Plan.<\/p>\n<p>The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board says the CPP Fund had $268.6 billion of net assets as of June 30, up from $264.6 billion a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>It\u00a0received\u00a0$4.2 billion in contributions from employees and employers covered by the Canada Pension Plan but that was offset by $200 million in net investment losses after costs.<\/p>\n<p>It says the portfolio&#8217;s gross investment return was flat for the quarter\u00a0and negative 0.1 per cent\u00a0on a net basis.<\/p>\n<p>That contrasted with the fund&#8217;s return for the 2014-15 financial year, which was a record 18.3 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>The three months from April to June was a busy quarter for CPPIB which did more than 25 investments, including several that were worth more than a billion of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We continue to assess and seize opportunities that fit our disciplined approach to produce long-term risk-adjusted returns,\u201d CPPIB chief executive Mark Wiseman said in a statement\u00a0when CPPIB released\u00a0its 2016 first-quarter financial results.<\/p>\n<p>Among the biggest deals during the quarter\u00a0was the acquisition of the Antares Capital lending operation from the financial arm of General Electric, for $12-billion.<\/p>\n<p>Antares Capital&#8217;s management and about 300 employees will operate the business as a stand-alone, independent lender to private-equity sponsors, subject to regulatory approval.<\/p>\n<p>CPPIB announced in May that it would invest more than $1 billion in a German real estate joint venture.
