Australian Psychological Society “Disturbed” By Climate Denialist Group’s “Misleading” Newspaper Advert<\/a><\/h3>\n

Australia\u2019s peak body representing psychologists has attacked a climate science denial group for a prominent advert taken out in a major national\u00a0newspaper.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Australian Psychological Society<\/a>\u00a0(APS<\/span>) says\u00a0the advert<\/a>\u00a0from a little-known group \u201cmisuses psychology-based arguments\u201d to \u201cmislead the public\u201d on the science of climate\u00a0change.<\/p>\n

In a stinging\u00a0letter to The Australian newspaper<\/a>, which ran the half-page advert, the\u00a0APS<\/span>\u00a0said the authors had shown \u201ccognitive biases\u201d in ignoring a \u201chuge body of scientific evidence\u201d on climate\u00a0change.<\/p>\n

The advertisers identified themselves only as \u201cThe Climate Study Group\u201d in the page five advert that appeared on 7 August under the title \u201cPsychology and the New Climate\u00a0Alarm\u201d.<\/p>\n

DeSmog has found the group members have links to mining, finance, agriculture and free market \u201cthink tank\u201d the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA<\/span>).<\/p>\n

Professor Lyn Littlefield,\u00a0APS<\/span>\u00a0executive director, wrote in the\u00a0letter:<\/p>\n

The Australian Psychological Society was disturbed to see psychology being misused to mislead the public on such an important topic as climate change, and for this to be published in a reputable\u00a0newspaper.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The advert claimed there was \u201cno evidence\u00a0CO<\/span>2 has determined climate in the past or that it could do so in the future\u201d and that \u201cthe next ice age remains the real global\u00a0threat\u201d.<\/p>\n

Those conclusions run counter to all the major scientific institutions and academies around the world, including the\u00a0UK<\/span>\u2019s Royal Society, the American Geophysical Union and the\u00a0US<\/span>\u00a0National Academy of Sciences.\u00a0Littlefield\u2019s letter\u00a0said:<\/p>\n

The advert\u2026 misuses psychology-based arguments to add credibility to myths and misinformation about climate change. In doing so, the authors illustrate aptly the very error bias (confirmation bias) they are erroneously attributing to the climate science\u00a0community.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
