{"id":10860,"date":"2015-08-09T17:47:18","date_gmt":"2015-08-09T22:47:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=10860"},"modified":"2015-08-09T17:47:18","modified_gmt":"2015-08-09T22:47:18","slug":"the-future-isnt-what-it-used-to-be","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=10860","title":{"rendered":"The future isn&#8217;t what it used to be"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"post-title entry-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/resourceinsights.blogspot.ca\/2015\/08\/the-future-isnt-what-is-used-to-be.html\">The future isn&#8217;t what it used to be<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"post-header-line-1\">Two recent films couldn&#8217;t be more at odds in their vision of the future.\u00a0<i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mad_Max:_Fury_Road\">Mad Max: Fury Road<\/a><\/i>\u00a0is the long-awaited continuation of the\u00a0<i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mad_Max_%28franchise%29\">Mad Max<\/a><\/i>\u00a0movie series. The movie is essentially a relentless chase scene set in a world burned to desert by climate change and bereft of civilization which has long since vanished in a haze of war and resource shortages.<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-body entry-content\">\n<p>(Spoiler alert: In this piece I discuss many events at the end of each film. For\u00a0<i>Mad Max<\/i>\u00a0fans this should make no difference in their enjoyment of the long and injurious chase scenes that are the meat of the film. I do not see how the confusing concatenation of nonsequiters that make up\u00a0<i>Tomorrowland<\/i>\u00a0could be ruined by my commentary. But, those who want to see the film without knowing the end should read no further&#8211;until they return from a showing.)<\/p>\n<p>In Disney&#8217;s\u00a0<i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tomorrowland_%28film%29\">Tomorrowland<\/a><\/i>\u00a0something&#8217;s gone wrong in the mysterious\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Theory_of_Forms\">Platonic dimension of forms<\/a>\u00a0called Tomorrowland which communicates with and influences the real world of today. Hugh Laurie plays the ruler of Tomorrowland. He laments that he has been sending messages to the real world for years about all the stupid things people are doing: wasting resources, changing the climate, polluting the planet, engaging in senseless wars. But almost no one seems to be listening. For those few who are, all they do is talk about the negative without offering any solutions.<\/p>\n<p>By now&#8211;meaning present-day global society&#8211;we were supposed to have gleaming, clean, clockwork cities everywhere&#8211;with flying cars, of course.
