{"id":10856,"date":"2015-08-09T17:43:02","date_gmt":"2015-08-09T22:43:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=10856"},"modified":"2015-08-09T17:43:02","modified_gmt":"2015-08-09T22:43:02","slug":"syncrude-bird-deaths-nexen-pipeline-spill-show-oilsands-degradation-of-ecosystem-first-nation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=10856","title":{"rendered":"Syncrude bird deaths, Nexen pipeline spill show oilsands&#8217; degradation of ecosystem: First Nation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"story-headline\">\n<h3 class=\"story-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/syncrude-bird-deaths-nexen-pipeline-spill-show-oilsands-degradation-of-ecosystem-first-nation-1.3184789\" target=\"_blank\">Syncrude bird deaths, Nexen pipeline spill show oilsands&#8217; degradation of ecosystem: First Nation<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"story-deck\"><strong>&#8216;Something is seriously wrong,&#8217; says Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The recent bird deaths at a Syncrude oilsands facility in northern Alberta along with\u00a0last month&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/edmonton\/nexen-pipeline-leak-in-alberta-spills-5-million-litres-1.3155907\">Nexen Energy pipeline spill<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 one of the biggest in the province&#8217;s history\u00a0\u2014\u00a0show the need for better oversight, a local First Nation says.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/alberta-pipelines-6-major-oil-spills-in-recent-history-1.3156604\">Alberta pipelines: 6 major oil spills in recent history<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;In less than one month, we have seen two major events that clearly demonstrate that something is seriously wrong,&#8221; said Allan Adam, chief of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN), in a news release. &#8220;These incidents, and the countless more seen in recent past, are contributing to the degradation of the local ecosystems and the treaty and aboriginal rights of nations in the region.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Alberta&#8217;s energy regulator said\u00a030 blue herons\u00a0died\u00a0earlier\u00a0this week at the\u00a0Mildred Lake Facility\u00a0north of Fort\u00a0McMurray, Alta. An investigation into\u00a0what caused the birds to die is still underway.<\/p>\n<p>Bob\u00a0Curran, a spokesman for the agency, says a\u00a0Syncrude\u00a0worker found one of the heron Wednesday. The animal was alive\u00a0but had to be\u00a0euthanized.
