The bolivar is still trading close to 700 to the US dollar on the black market, and the Caracas stock index keeps making new all time highs in nominal terms almost every day. Ironically, Venezuela\u2019s currency is called the \u201c<em>bolivar fuerte<\/em>\u201d (VEF), i.e. \u201c<em>the strong bolivar<\/em>\u201d ever since it has been \u201creverse split\u201d 1 for 1,000 in January 2008.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39123\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acting-man.com\/blog\/media\/2015\/08\/brain-drain.jpg\" alt=\"brain-drain\" width=\"369\" height=\"245\" \/>Image via designlimbo.com<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As an aside, the stock market has likewise been subject to a reverse split of 1 for 1,000 about a year ago \u2013 pre-split the index would now be trading at a cool\u00a0<em>15.5 million points.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.acting-man.com\/blog\/media\/2015\/08\/Bolivar.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-39118\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acting-man.com\/blog\/media\/2015\/08\/Bolivar-1024x503.png\" alt=\"Bolivar\" width=\"600\" height=\"295\" \/><\/a>The black market rate of the \u201cstrong\u201d bolivar (VEF) \u2013 1 USD now buys nearly 700 VEF \u2013 click to enlarge.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Venezuela has the highest sovereign CDS spreads in the world.
