Obama Makes Fracking a Cornerstone of Climate Policy \u2026 But Fracking Does Much More Harm than Good<\/a><\/h3>\n

A Fracked Up Policy<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cClean natural gas\u201d from fracking has been touted for years as a cure for global warming.\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s a cornerstone of Obama\u2019s climate plan.<\/p>\n

But scientists say that fracking pumps out a lot of methane \u2026 into both\u00a0our drinking water<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0the environment<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas:\u00a072 times<\/a>\u00a0more potent as a warming source than CO2.\u00a0 As such, fracking actually\u00a0increases<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 rather than decreases \u2013 global warming<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Cornell University\u00a0researchers\u00a0found in 2011 that \u2013 when measured in its entire life cycle \u2013 fracked gas emits\u00a0much MORE greenhouse gas than coal<\/a>.\u00a0 And\u00a0see this<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Last year, a study published by Purdue scientists in the\u00a0Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that fracking puts\u00a0between 100 and 1,000 times more methane<\/a>\u00a0into the atmosphere than the EPA assumed.<\/p>\n

And a new scientific\u00a0paper<\/a>\u00a0published at\u00a0Energy & Science Engineering<\/em>\u00a0by expert and gas industry consultant Touch\u00e9 Howard shows that previous studies cited by the EPA and the fracking industry low-balled actual fracking emission rates \u201cby factors of three to five.\u201d<\/p>\n

A 2014\u00a0study<\/a>\u00a0by scientists from Colorado and Brown University found that fracking increases severe birth defects \u2013 including congenital\u00a0heart defects \u2013 for families living within 10 miles of fracking sites.<\/p>\n

A team of Yale scientists published a\u00a0study<\/a>\u00a0last year in the journal\u00a0Environmental Health Perspectives<\/em>which found that people who live near fracking sites have more health problems than those who don\u2019t.<\/p>\n
