{"id":10630,"date":"2015-08-02T07:25:57","date_gmt":"2015-08-02T12:25:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=10630"},"modified":"2015-08-02T07:25:57","modified_gmt":"2015-08-02T12:25:57","slug":"exclusive-edward-snowden-explains-why-apple-should-continue-to-fight-the-government-on-encryption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=10630","title":{"rendered":"EXCLUSIVE: Edward Snowden Explains Why Apple Should Continue To Fight the Government on Encryption"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"Post-title\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.0.4.0.1.0.1.0\"><a class=\"Post-title-link\" href=\"https:\/\/firstlook.org\/theintercept\/2015\/07\/31\/exclusive-edward-snowden-says-obama-administrations-war-encryption-just-doesnt-make-sense\/\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.0.4.0.1.0.1.0.0\">EXCLUSIVE: Edward Snowden Explains Why Apple Should Continue To Fight the Government on Encryption<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>As the Obama administration\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/firstlook.org\/theintercept\/2015\/07\/08\/fbi-doj-name-new-enemy-crypto-wars-apple-google\/\">campaign<\/a>\u00a0to stop the commercialization of strong encryption\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/firstlook.org\/theintercept\/2015\/07\/30\/obama-administration-war-apple-google-just-got-uglier\/\">heats up<\/a>, National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden is firing back on behalf of the companies like Apple and Google that are finding themselves under attack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTechnologists and companies working to protect ordinary citizens should be applauded, not sued or prosecuted,\u201d Snowden wrote in an email through his lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>Snowden was asked by\u00a0<em>The Intercept<\/em>\u00a0to respond to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/firstlook.org\/theintercept\/2015\/07\/30\/obama-administration-war-apple-google-just-got-uglier\/\">contentious suggestion<\/a>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0made Thursday on a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawfareblog.com\/civil-liability-end-end-encryption-threat-or-fantasy-part-ii\">blog<\/a>\u00a0that frequently promotes the interests of the national security establishment \u2014 that companies like Apple and Google might in certain cases be found\u00a0legally\u00a0liable for providing material aid to a terrorist organization because they provide encryption services to their users.<\/p>\n<p>In his email, Snowden explained how law enforcement\u00a0officials who are demanding that U.S. companies build some sort of window into unbreakable end-to-end encryption \u2014 he calls that an \u201cinsecurity mandate\u201d \u2014 haven\u2019t thought things through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe central problem with insecurity mandates has never been addressed by its proponents: if one government can demand access to private communications, all governments can,\u201d Snowden wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo matter how good the reason, if the U.S. sets the precedent that Apple has to compromise the security of a customer in response to a piece of government paper, what can they do when the government is China and the customer is the Dalai Lama?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weakened encryption would only drive people away from the American technology industry, Snowden wrote. \u201cPutting the most important driver of our economy in a position where they have to deal with the devil or lose access to international markets is public policy that makes us less competitive and less safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Snowden\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/glenngreenwald.net\/\">entrusted<\/a>\u00a0his archive of secret documents revealing the NSA\u2019s massive warrantless spying programs all over the world to journalists in 2013.
