A wooden oil rig towering over a local museum\u00a0<a style=\"color: #3399cc; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" href=\"http:\/\/uncoveringpa.com\/visiting-penn-brad-oil-museum\" target=\"_blank\">commemorates<\/a>\u00a0those heady days, marking the first \u201cbillion dollar oil field\u201d in the\u00a0world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 1em 0px;\">But times have changed dramatically in Bradford. Most of the oil has been pumped out, leaving residents atop an aging oil field that requires complicated upkeep and mounting costs. Since its\u00a0<a style=\"color: #3399cc; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bradfordpa.com\/resources\/414.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">height<\/a>\u00a0in the 1940&#8217;s, Bradford&#8217;s population has steadily declined, leaving the city now home to only 8,600\u00a0<a style=\"color: #3399cc; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" href=\"http:\/\/quickfacts.census.gov\/qfd\/states\/42\/4208040.html\" target=\"_blank\">people<\/a>, down from over 17,000.\u00a0<br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" \/><br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" \/>The story of Bradford these days is a story of thousands of oil and gas wells: abandoned, uncapped, and often\u00a0leaking.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 1em 0px;\">To drive through McKean County, home to Bradford and much of the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #3399cc; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=trZQ2NgFowE&amp;list=UUhfh9Cr7cHUEdhajuL4ZH_A&amp;index=100\" target=\"_blank\">Allegheny National Forest<\/a>, is to witness an array of creative ways people have found to hide the remnants of this bygone boom. Rusted metal pipes \u2014 the old steel casings from long abandoned wells \u2014 jut from lawns and roadsides. Mailboxes are strapped to some of the taller pipes.
