Because that&#8217;s how this network flexes its muscle and advances corporate\u00a0interests.<\/p>\n<p>Look no further than the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2013\/12\/09\/stink-tanks-historical-records-reveal-state-policy-network-created-alec\" target=\"_blank\">State Policy Networl (<span class=\"caps\">SPN<\/span>)<\/a>, an entity created by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/directory\/vocabulary\/6907\" target=\"_blank\">American Legislative Exchange Council (<span class=\"caps\">ALEC<\/span>)<\/a>\u00a0corporate bill mill, which acts as the central hub around which the rest of the spokes in the think-tank (or \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/stinktanks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">stink tank<\/a>\u201d) and public relations wheel connect. Both of these groups play a central role in the\u00a0report.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cOnce\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">ALEC<\/span>\u00a0model bills are introduced, allied legislators and fossilfuel-funded front groups cite flawed reports to back up their reasoning to either repeal or weaken\u201d laws favorable to advancing renewable energy, the report explains. \u201c[Thereafter], State Policy Network lobbyists\u2026[provide] testimony in favor of the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">ALEC<\/span>\u00a0bills. Finally, fossil fuel-funded members groups, such as Americans for Prosperity, put additional pressure on lawmakers to pass\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">ALEC<\/span>\u00a0model\u00a0bills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">ALEC<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">SPN<\/span>\u00a0are just two examples and although they play a pivotal role, the report points to 23 other industry-funded front groups also part of the anti-renewable influence peddling machine. Others include names familiar to DeSmog readers, including the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php\/Koch_Brothers\" target=\"_blank\">Koch<\/a>-funded\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php\/Americans_for_Prosperity\" target=\"_blank\">Americans for Prosperity<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/Institute for Energy Reearch\" target=\"_blank\">Institute for Energy Research<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/heartland-institute\" target=\"_blank\">Heartland Institute<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php\/Consumer_Energy_Alliance\" target=\"_blank\">Consumer Energy Alliance (<span class=\"caps\">CEA<\/span>)<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0others.<\/p>\n<h3>Not Just Money in Politics,\u00a0Lobbying<\/h3>\n<p>The report has citation after citation raising dire questions about the state,\u00a0and often lack thereof,\u00a0of\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span>\u00a0democracy.
