{"id":10362,"date":"2015-07-24T07:27:54","date_gmt":"2015-07-24T12:27:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=10362"},"modified":"2015-07-24T07:27:54","modified_gmt":"2015-07-24T12:27:54","slug":"the-dangers-of-european-dis-union","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=10362","title":{"rendered":"The Dangers of European Dis-Union"},"content":{"rendered":"<header>\n<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2015\/07\/23\/the-dangers-of-european-dis-union\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Dangers of European Dis-Union<\/a><\/h3>\n<p class=\"entry-meta\"><strong>The \u201cEuropean Project\u201d is under unprecedented stress from fissures both east-and-west (over the Ukraine crisis) and north-and-south (over the Greek and refugee crises) \u2013 and it\u2019s unclear whether the Continent\u2019s\u00a0bureaucrats\u00a0can keep the European Union from splintering apart, as Nat Parry explains.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<hr \/>\n<p>The near collapse of the Greek economy and the harsh austerity package forced on Athens by the European Union has led to increasing commentary in recent weeks on what the developments might mean for the \u201cEuropean project\u201d \u2013 the one-time seemingly inevitable drive on the European continent for an \u201cever closer union\u201d based on principles of economic, social and territorial cohesion\u00a0and solidarity among EU member states.<\/p>\n<p>Far from a demonstration of cohesion and solidarity, as\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0columnist Paul Krugman<a href=\"http:\/\/krugman.blogs.nytimes.com\/2015\/07\/12\/killing-the-european-project\/?_r=0\"><u>noted<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in a July 12 op-ed, the lesson learned over the past few weeks is that \u201cbeing a member of the eurozone means that the creditors can destroy your economy if you step out of line.\u201d In Krugman\u2019s view, the fundamental economics are simple enough: \u201cimposing harsh austerity without debt relief is a doomed policy no matter how willing the country is to accept suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"image-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/merkel-hollande-and-tsipras-meet-in-riga.w_l.jpg?55ac53\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15428\" src=\"http:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/merkel-hollande-and-tsipras-meet-in-riga.w_l-300x169.jpg?55ac53\" alt=\"Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras (center) with French President Francois Hollande (left) and German Chancellor Angela Merkel (right).\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" data-lazy-loaded=\"true\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Krugman is not alone in his bleak appraisal of the situation.
