Her 2012 book,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Saudi-Arabia-People-Religion-Lines--\/dp\/0307473287\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1437145479&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=house+on+saudi+arabia\"><em><u>On Saudi Arabia: Its People, Past, Religion, Fault Lines \u2013 and Future<\/u><\/em><\/a>, is actually well worth reading.\u00a0The product of years of behind-the-scenes reporting, it provided readers with a fascinating tour of a kingdom drowning in sleaze, decadence and hypocrisy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIslam as preached is not practiced,\u201d House wrote.\u00a0\u201cJobs are promised but not delivered.\u00a0Corruption is rampant, entrapping almost every Saudi in a web of favors and bribes large and small, leaving even the recipients feeling soiled and resentful.\u00a0Powerful and powerless alike are seeking to grab whatever they can get, turning a society governed by supposedly strict Sharia law into an increasingly lawless one, where law is whatever the king or one of his judges says it is \u2013 or people feel they can get away with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"image-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/saudiss-14.jpg?55ac53\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14786\" src=\"http:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/saudiss-14-300x200.jpg?55ac53\" alt=\"Saudi King Salman bids farewell to President Barack Obama at Erga Palace after a state visit to Saudi Arabia on Jan. 27, 2015.
