And a summation of that data with charts can be found at Association of American Railroads \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aar.org\/Pages\/Freight-Rail-Traffic-Data.aspx#weeklyrailtraffic\">Freight Rail Traffic Data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/peakoilbarrel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Rail-Oil-Carloads-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8669\" src=\"http:\/\/peakoilbarrel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Rail-Oil-Carloads-3.jpg\" alt=\"Rail Oil Carloads 3\" width=\"1009\" height=\"527\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Crude oil by rail basically started with the shale boom. Prior to that almost all oil was shipped by pipeline. Of course a lot of oil was trucked to the pipelines. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.cfm?id=17751\">EIA<\/a>\u00a0says in the first seven months of 2014 8 percent of all us crude and refined products was shipped by rail. It looks like that percentage was increased somewhat in the second half of 2014.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/peakoilbarrel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Rail-Oil-Carloads.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8667\" src=\"http:\/\/peakoilbarrel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Rail-Oil-Carloads.jpg\" alt=\"Rail Oil Carloads\" width=\"1043\" height=\"492\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Oil by rail, for the entire USA, peaked in August, September and October of 2014 and has declined since.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/peakoilbarrel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Daily-Oil-by-Rail-21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8675\" src=\"http:\/\/peakoilbarrel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Daily-Oil-by-Rail-21.jpg\" alt=\"Daily Oil by Rail 2\" width=\"851\" height=\"506\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have converted the weekly carloads to daily then converted carloads to barrels. There are about 700 barrels per carload. That gives us the average barrels per day by rail.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/peakoilbarrel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Daily-Oil-by-Rail.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8671\" src=\"http:\/\/peakoilbarrel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Daily-Oil-by-Rail.jpg\" alt=\"Daily Oil by Rail\" width=\"856\" height=\"444\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have converted the weekly \u201cdaily average\u201d to monthly \u201cdaily average\u201d and plotted it against the North Dakota production. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.cfm?id=17751\">EIA<\/a>\u00a0says:<em>\u00a0Between 60% and 70% of the more than 1 million barrels per day of oil produced in the state has been\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.cfm?id=16631\">transported to refineries by rail<\/a>\u00a0each month in the first half of 2014, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/northdakotapipelines.com\/directors-cut\/\">North Dakota Pipeline Authority<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/peakoilbarrel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Rail-Oil-ND-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8677\" src=\"http:\/\/peakoilbarrel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Rail-Oil-ND-1.jpg\" alt=\"Rail Oil ND 1\" width=\"761\" height=\"528\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As we can see from this chart the volume of oil shipped by rail changes from month to month. The chart is barrels per day per month. The peak, for North Dakota, is December 2014.
