‘Duck and Cover’ Drills Exacerbate Fears of N. Korea War

‘Duck and Cover’ Drills Exacerbate Fears of N. Korea War

A recent false alarm in Hawaii had citizens in a state of panic over an impending nuclear attack, which, as Ann Wright speculates, may have been the point.

A “duck and cover” school drill from the 1950s.

Are you ready for nuclear attack warning sirens in your community?  I live in the State of Hawaii, which decided in December 2107 to begin monthly nuclear attack warning siren drills, similar to the monthly tsunami warning sirens that are tested each month.

You know what happened – an employee of the State of Hawaii Emergency Management Department pushed the wrong button, setting off the siren, and no one alerted the public for nearly 49 minutes that it was a drill. Cell phone alerts to everyone in the 808 area code flashed “Nuclear attack warning-take cover,” with residents and tourists alike going into crisis mode.

Three days prior to the false alarm, 20 of us attempted to call to the attention of the state government that the sirens are being used for political advancement of a hysteria for war with North Korea, or DPRK – the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. We do not believe the North Korean government is going to attack the United States and suspect that the nuclear sirens and “duck and cover” drills are purposeful and dangerous fear-mongering.

The sirens heighten the anxiety and stress of impending conflict and devastation, making citizens afraid – and in their fear, more likely to accept whatever line the government feeds them on threats and counter-measures.

Successive administrations have lied our country into wars – from Vietnam to Iraq. We do not agree for the need for war with North Korea and refuse to accept the attempted U.S. intimidation of the DPRK, which could lead to war. The sirens, much like the steady barrage of “orange alert” terror warnings in 2002-2003 that preceded the U.S. invasion of Iraq, normalize the potential for war.

North Korea Says “Trump Declared War”, Threatens To Shoot Down US Jets

North Korea Says “Trump Declared War”, Threatens To Shoot Down US Jets

Having raged at President Trump’s “suicide mission” on Saturday, North Korea’s foreign minister Ri Yong Ho called for an impromptu press conference this morning following President Trump’s extended travel ban, in which the diplomat said that Trump’s recent tweet that DPRK’s leadership would not be around much longer amounted to “a declaration of war” and added that North Korea has “every right to take countermeasures against the United States,  including to shoot down American jets outside the DPRK’s airspace” as part of its right to self-defense under the United Nations charter.

“The UN Charter acknowledges member states’ right of self-defense,” Ri said outside a hotel near the UN headquarters on Monday. “As the United States has declared a war, even though its strategic bombers don’t cross our border, we will come to own all rights to respond for self-defense including shooting down its planes at any time.

The whole world should clearly remember it was the U.S. who first declared war on our country,” Ri added as he was leaving the United Nations after a week of General Assembly meetings in New York.

“Since the United States declared war on our country, we will have every right to make countermeasures, including the right to shoot down United States strategic bombers even when they are not inside the airspace border of our country.”

Referring to Mr. Trump’s assertion that the North Korean leadership may not “be around much longer,” Mr. Ri said that the question of “who would be around much longer will be answered” by North Korea.

CONFIRMED: North Korea has enough oil to survive embargo

CONFIRMED: North Korea has enough oil to survive embargo

While a full scale oil embargo against North Korea is unlikely, the reality is that North Korea would be able to survive such a measure with comparative ease.

The United States has recently suggested a global oil embargo against North Korea, something both China and Russia oppose. The DPRK’s neighbours to the north support UN sanctions against Pyongyang, but have firmly opposed unilateral US sanctions against North Korea.

Russia and China have made a commitment never to support sanctions against Pyongyang which could negatively impact on the civilian population of their neighbour and this would almost certainly include a full-scale oil embargo.

On the contrary, Russia’s plan to de-escalate tensions on the Korean peninsula is to develop trilateral economic initiatives linking South and North Korea to Russia. Given the realities on the peninsula, Russia’s ‘carrot’ is seen as preferable on both sides of the 38th parallel to Washington’s increasingly bellicose ‘stick’.

But even if Donald Trump was somehow able to convince the world to engage in an oil embargo against North Korea, North Korea would appear to have enough domestic oil reserves to make up for the loss of imports.

In addition to large reserves of domestic coal and the increased reliance on green energy in the form of hydroelectric power , North Korea’s domestic oil reserves are likely far greater than previous conservative estimates have indicated.

Even prior to the new threat of sanctions, North Korea has been increasingly self-sufficient in beginning to tap its still largely unused oil reserves.

In 2015, when relations between the DPRK and the rest of the world were somewhat better than they are at present, independent oil exploration expert Michael Rego investigated North Korea’s oil potential.

Furious North Korea Slams US As “Heinous Aggressor Who Is Begging For War”, Vows To “Respond In Our Own Way”

Furious North Korea Slams US As “Heinous Aggressor Who Is Begging For War”, Vows To “Respond In Our Own Way”

North Korea said Tuesday it will “respond in our own ways” to any new sanctions that may be put in place following Pyongyang’s latest nuclear test.

According to Yonhap, In a Q&A session with the state-run Korean Central News Agency, the North Korean foreign ministry spokesman blasted the United States for leading the international efforts to adopt a fresh sanctions resolution. Flipping the table on Nikki Haley’s Monday Statement that North Korea is begging for war, North Korea said that it was the US that a “heinous aggressor who is begging for war.”

“Testing an H-bomb for an intercontinental ballistic rocket is a normal process that we must carry out to accomplish our policy of byongjin,” the spokesman said, referring to the North’s signature policy of seeking nuclear armament and economic development.

“In the face of the U.S. scheme of putting pressure through sanctions, we’ll respond in our own ways,” he added. “And the U.S. will be fully responsible for the catastrophic consequences that follow.”

KCNA also said that the US “should not forget even for a moment about the presence of the DPRK, the full- fledged nuclear power in possession of ICBM as well as A-bomb and H-bomb”

As a reminder, the U.S. and South Korea reportedly want new sanctions to include a cutoff of oil supplies to the North, though China appears reluctant to take a measure that it worries would lead to the collapse of its neighbor.

Earlier on Tuesday, North Korea said its recent missile launch and other “self-defense” measures were a “gift package” to the United States and warned other such gifts are on the way if Washington continues its “reckless provocations.”

North Korea Declares State Of War After Argument Over Loudspeaker Spirals Out Of Control

North Korea Declares State Of War After Argument Over Loudspeaker Spirals Out Of Control

Kim Jong-un has declared a state of war following an escalation of hostilities across the DMZ. Here’s Xinhua:

The top leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Un has ordered the country’s frontline combined forces to enter state of war from 5pm (0830 GMT) Friday. the official KCNA news agency reported Friday, the official KCNA news agency reported early Friday.

Kim made the order at an emergency enlarged meeting of the central military commission of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, said the report.

He ordered the forces to be well armed to cope with any possible operations at any time. Kim also gave the order that the frontline area enter quasi state of war from 5 pm Friday.

During the emergency meeting, political and military countermeasures aimed to smash the enemy’s war provocations were discussed while the military’s combat plan of the frontline command was approved, according to the KCNA.

How did it come to this you ask? Below is the amusing backstory…

North Korea’s Kim Jong-un – the world’s sabre rattler par excellence – doesn’t like to stray too far from the spotlight when it comes to global conflict, which is why we weren’t terribly surprised when, a few days ago, the pariah state threatened to invadethe US mainland and use “weapons unknown to the world.”

Of course a lot of what goes on inside the country is “unknown to the world”, much as the world is largely “unknown” to North Koreans and that’s just fine with Kim, whose regime depends on a combination of propaganda and censorship to keep the populace transfixed in a perpetual state of hypnotic hero worship.
